호주 출신 The Kid Laroi, ‘Favourite Pop Song’-‘Collaboration of the Year’ 후보에
한국 대중음악(Korean popular music)은 이제 한국 내에서 만이 아니라 전 세계 고정 지지층을 확보한, ‘인기 있는’(popular) 팝 음악으로 자리잡았다. 각국 음악 팬들이 한국어 가사를 따라 부르는 일은 어렵지 않게 볼 수 있는 풍경이며 각 대중음악에 맞춘 K-Pop 댄스 또한 전 세계인의 공통어가 되어가고 있다.
이를 반영하듯 그래미(Grammy Award), 빌보드(Billboard Music Awards)와 함께 세계 3대 대중음악 시상으로 꼽히는 ‘아메리칸 뮤직 어워드’(American Music Awards. AMA)가 올해 처음으로 ‘최고 인기의 K-Pop 가수’를 선정하는 ‘Favorite K-Pop Artist’를 시상 카테고리에 추가했다.
다음 달 개최되는 시상을 앞두고 올해 신설된 새 카테고리에는 ‘블랙핑크’(Blackpink), ‘방탄소년단’(BTS), ‘세븐틴’(Seventeen), 투모로우바이투게더‘(Tomorrow X Together), ’트와이스‘(Twice)가 후보에 지명됐다.
2010년대 들어 전 세계 음악팬들을 사로잡던 K-Pop은 높은 음악성, 이에 어우러진 댄스 열풍이 국제적 현상으로 부상하면서 한국의 가장 ‘핫’한 문화상품이자 수출품 중 하나가 됐으며, 높은 장벽으로 여겨졌던 팝의 본고장 미국 시장에서 가장 인기 있는 가수 반열에 오르는 아티스트들이 속속 나오고 있다.
이 추세의 최전선에 가수 비(Rain)가 있는 것으로 알려져 있지만 세계적 히트를 기록한 이는 풍자적 곡과 율동인 ‘강남스타일’로 단숨에 세계인을 사로잡은 래퍼 ‘싸이’(Psy)였다.
이 음악 비디오는 2012년 출시 이후 단숨에 수억 명의 시청자를 기록했으며, 현재까지 ‘유투브’(youtube.com) 조회수는 45억 회 이상에 달한다.
이런 가운데 보다 폭넓고 확고하게 지지층을 얻은 가수는 지난 2018년 K-Pop 아티스트로는 최초로 미국 빌보드 200(US Billboard 200) 앨범 차트 1위에 오른 남성그룹 방탄소년단(BTS)이다.
한편 올해 추가된 또 다른 카테고리에는 Burna Boy, CKay, Fireboy DML, Tems, Wizkid가 후보로 지명된 ‘Favourite Afrobeats Artist’과 함께 ‘Favourite Rock Song’, ‘Favourite Rock Album’이 있다.
호주 원주민 부족 카밀라로이(Kamilaroi 또는 Gamilaraay)에서 이름을 딴 호주 출신 The Kid Laroi(본명은 Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard)는 저스틴 비버(Justin Bieber)와의 협업으로 ‘Favourite Pop Song’ 및 ‘Collaboration of the Year’ 등 두 부문에 노미네이트 됐다.
AMA의 각 카테고리 수상자는 팬 투표와 함께 각 아티스트의 음악 스트리밍, 엘범 판매, 라디오 방송, 공연 총수입 등이 고려된다. 아울러 올해 시상식은 오는 11월 20일(미국 서부시간), 로스앤젤레스에서 열린다.
